<image:caption>In 2018, they premiered their immersive oceanic rock oratorio, Black Inscription, at the Prototype Festival in NYC. A song cycle for 7 musicians, it follows a mythologized version of the late great freediver Natalia Molchanova on her final journey through our ocean. Through her eyes, we see, hear and experience things that are both awe-inspiring and devastating. www.blackinscription.com.</image:caption>

      <image:title>the book of knots</image:title>
<image:caption>A studio project based out of Studio G (Brooklyn, NY), The Book of Knots is the sonic equivalent of a bull in a china shop. The four core members grind out beautifully rough-hewn, dust-filled experimental rock songs, and then invite all manner of musical compatriots to add their voices to the mayhem. Special guests have included Tom Waits, Mike Watt, Rick Moody, David Thomas, Carla Bozulich, Zeena Parkins, Blixa Bargeld, Jon Langford and Megan Reilley. The first CD, The Book of Knots (Arclight Records), is a waterlogged collection of songs chronicling mostly failed sea voyages. The second, Traineater (Anti-), is a portrait of crumbling mid-western rust belt towns. The third, Garden of Fainting Stars (Ipecac Recordings), was deemed the number 1 rock record of 2011 by Rock A Rolla magazine. A tribute to experiments in flight and space travel, it completes our trilogy: by sea, by land, by air, and features vocal performances by Mike Patton, Blixa Bargeld, Nils Frykdahl and Elyas Khan. They are currently working on their 4th album, Hiraeth. You can find their albums wherever you prefer to listen to music. (Though the band is "The Book of Knots" they are variously labeled with and without the "The.") The Book of Knots is: MATTHIAS BOSSI – DRUMS, VOICE, KEYBOARDS JOEL HAMILTON – GUITARS CARLA KIHLSTEDT – VIOLIN, VIOLA, VOICE TONY MAIMONE – BASS</image:caption>

      <image:title>tin hat</image:title>
<image:caption>Evocative melodies, subtle textures and elegant arrangements are the hallmark of this evolving composers’ collective. Though Tin Hat (formerly Tin Hat Trio) never pitches their tent in any musical camp for very long, their musical topography is varied yet remarkably cohesive. Their atmospheric sound sways gracefully between the worlds of folk, classical, Americana and countless others. The New York Press put it this way: Tin Hat “interweaves Old World Europe with postmodern America, south-of-the-border sensuality with concert-hall propriety, and odd-metered syncopation with deeply soulful grooves.” Their first five studio albums – Memory is an Elephant, Helium, The Rodeo Eroded, The Book of Silk and The Sad Machinery of Spring – were largely instrumental, but included vocal cameos by Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Mike Patton, and Carla Kihlstedt. On their most recent studio album – the rain is a handsome animal – 17 songs after the poetry of E.E. Cummings (New Amsterdam Records) – Kihlstedt embraced the dual role of violinist/vocalist, interpreting Cummings’ concise, bold and whimsical poetry.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It was also a family, a traveling circus, a soothsayer, a call to arms, a blind man standing naked in the middle of a bridge, a Saturnalian celebration, and yes… a Museum. SGM are collectively makers of instruments, barkers and bakers, finders and fixers, drawers and snappers, and brave putters-together of thought and theory into great big orderly messes of sound and fury. Built on a circuitous and bewildering mythology, SGM has released 3 studio records: Grand Opening and Closing (The End, 2001), Of Natural History (Mimicry, 2004) and In Glorious Times (The End, 2007). The fourth and final record, Of the Last Human Being, will be released at some indiscernible date in the future, followed by a vaguely educational film about The Last Human Being, and a live concert DVD. Though the band is officially dead and gone, they are not entirely opposed to the idea of posthumous activity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>26 Little Deaths - June 23-24, 2022</image:title>
<image:caption>Carla Kihlstedt’s 26 Little Deaths is a 60-minute set of 26 miniatures for singing violinist and chamber orchestra, inspired by Edward Gorey’s macabre abecedary, The Gashlycrumb Tinies – an illustrated children’s book in which, on every page, a child meets an untimely demise. Following in the footsteps of Hanns Eilser and Kurt Weill who moved seamlessly between art song, pop song and cabaret, Kihlstedt has created a song cycle for the extraordinary players of Present Music that captures the pathos, humor and wit of Gorey’s iconic images.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The live version is performed by 7 musicians in an immersive environment created by a fabulous team of designers – lighting, video, stage and sound. Black Inscription follows world famous free diver Natalia Molchanova as she swims through the ocean on her final, fatal dive. It is about the power and the fragility of the ocean and the profound place it holds in our lives and our psyches. The initial phase was supported by a grant from Visions and Voices at USC. The fully-rendered multi-media performance, co-directed by Carla and by Mark DeChiazza, premiered at the 2018 Prototype Festival in NYC. For more details, go to BlackInscription.com.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Necessary Monsters</image:title>
<image:caption>In his The Book of Imaginary Beings, Jorges Luis Borges assembled a compendium of 120 fictional beasts from the mythologies, stories and superstitions of cultures around the globe and through the ages. Though each being originates from a particular place and time, their resonance is universal. They are all manifestations of an aspect of the human experience, borne out of our collective imaginations. They are the embodiment of our hopes and fears, a multi-faceted depiction of the shadows in our human nature.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Necessary Monsters</image:title>
<image:caption>Necessary Monsters is a song-cycle based on nine of the creatures from Luis Borges’ book with words by poet Rafael Osés and music by Carla Kihlstedt. It is a kind of psychological safari, complete with a poetically-rich field guide which introduces the audience to the character, habits and habitat of each monster. Necessary Monsters began as a co-commissioning project by Alverno Presents in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the National Performance Network Creation Fund. The NPN Creation Fund is sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation, Nathan Cummings Foundation, Altria, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency). NM has been performed as a theater piece in Milwaukee, Chicago and San Francisco. It has since evolved into an elegant and dramatic song cycle for 7 musicians and a narrator.</image:caption>
